How One Client Resolved Her Hashimoto’s Symptoms in Four Months and Got Her Energy Back
When "Normal" Labs Don't Tell the Whole Story
Your labs look “normal,” but you don’t feel like yourself.
Your energy is gone. Your mind feels foggy. Your hair is thinning, and the weight won’t budge—no matter how careful you are with food and exercise.
You start to wonder if this is just how you’re going to feel from now on.
But what if your energy felt steady again throughout the day?
What if your mind felt clear, your sleep was deep, and your weight finally started to shift—without extreme dieting or over-exercising?
This is what can become possible when the right pieces are identified and addressed.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
This is exactly how one of my clients, Joanne, felt when she first came to me.
For over three years, she had been dealing with a growing list of symptoms—only to be told they were likely due to perimenopause.
Her symptoms included:
daily fatigue
brain fog
anxiety
insomnia
bloating and constipation
20 pounds of weight gain
hair loss
Despite exercising regularly and eating well, her fatigue, brain fog, and other persistent symptoms kept getting worse. Joanne couldn’t understand why and was starting to feel discouraged.
After Four Months Inside The Functional Thyroid Method, Joanne Experienced the Following Changes:
restored her energy
cleared her brain fog
started sleeping through the night
normalized her digestion
lost 15 pounds
normalized her T3 levels
eliminated her thyroid antibodies
Most importantly, she felt like herself again. For the first time in years, she also understood why her body had been struggling.

When Clean Eating and Exercise Still Aren’t Enough to Feel Better When You Have Hashimoto's
Joanne was a 44-year-old working mom with two pre-teen kids. Like many busy women, she was juggling work, family responsibilities, and trying to stay healthy.
She ate a mostly whole-food diet.
She exercised intensely several times per week, waking up early to fit in HIIT, cardio, and strength training before work.
She had been doing intermittent fasting for more than two years and usually skipped breakfast.
From the outside, it looked like she was doing everything right.
But inside, she felt exhausted mentally, emotionally and physically.
Her energy was gone.
Her digestion was unpredictable. She often felt bloated after eating, dealt with frequent stomach discomfort, and never knew whether she would experience constipation or loose stools from one day to the next.
Her weight kept creeping up despite exercise and clean eating.
And the most frustrating part?
Her doctor kept telling her that her labs looked normal. Her symptoms were attributed to aging and perimenopause.
But Joanne knew something deeper was going on.
She didn’t feel like herself anymore.
Why Many Women With Hashimoto’s Are Told Their Labs Are “Normal” Even While Their Symptoms Keep Getting Worse
When we reviewed Joanne’s health history, something stood out immediately.
A previous lab had shown an elevated ANA marker -suggesting her immune system might be involved.
Combined with her symptoms, this pointed to a common but often missed condition:
Hashimoto’s, an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the thyroid.
Because thyroid hormones affect nearly every system in the body, this can lead to symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, and digestive issues—many of which are often mistaken for perimenopause or stress.
This is one of the biggest reasons so many women don’t get answers.
Most conventional testing relies heavily on TSH—but TSH can stay “normal” for years, even while the autoimmune process is already underway. As a result, Hashimoto’s often goes undiagnosed for years.
That’s why a full thyroid panel, including antibodies, is so important. It allows us to catch what standard testing often misses—and understand what’s actually driving symptoms.
Identifying Hashimoto’s earlier allows you to make targeted changes sooner—so you can feel better faster and protect your thyroid function over time, often reducing how aggressively it needs to be managed later.
Since Joanne was due for her annual physical, I suggested she request a complete thyroid panel, along with key nutrient markers often low in women with Hashimoto’s, including ferritin, vitamin D, and B12.
A week later, the results confirmed what we suspected.
This is a pattern I’ve now seen in countless women with Hashimoto’s.
Looking Beyond TSH to Uncover What May Actually Be Driving Hashimoto’s Symptoms
Joanne’s thyroid still looked “normal” since her TSH was still within range, which is why her symptoms had been dismissed previously.
But a deeper look told a different story.
The full panel revealed what had been missed for years.
Her lab results confirmed that Joanne had Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and subclinical hypothyroidism.
Her Free T3, the active thyroid hormone responsible for energy and metabolism, was well below range. When T3 levels are low, the body’s systems slow down, which can contribute to symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, and digestive issues.
Her thyroid antibodies were elevated, confirming an autoimmune attack on the thyroid—one of the clearest signs of Hashimoto’s.
Her other markers also revealed several additional imbalances, including:
• low ferritin
• low vitamin B12
• low vitamin D
• rising glucose and insulin
• increasing cholesterol markers
Joanne’s doctor prescribed Levothyroxine to support her thyroid.
Medication can be extremely helpful for restoring thyroid hormone levels.
But in autoimmune thyroid disease, medication alone often doesn’t alleviate symptoms.
That’s where our deeper work began.
Why Improving Hashimoto’s Symptoms Requires Looking Beyond the Thyroid Itself
Inside the Functional Thyroid Method program, I use my Britesquare four-pillar framework for optimizing your thyroid health and alleviating Hashimoto’s symptoms:
Diet & Nutrients
Gut Microbiome & Leaky Gut
Environmental & Dietary Toxicities
Mindset & Lifestyle
Hashimoto’s rarely develops from a single cause. It’s usually the result of multiple stressors building over time, which is why focusing on the thyroid alone often isn’t enough to resolve symptoms. Our goal is to identify which of these factors are most relevant for each individual.
How Deeper Testing Helped Explain Joanne’s Fatigue, Brain Fog, and Stubborn Weight Gain
To better understand what was driving Joanne’s symptoms, we ran several functional lab tests.
Unlike conventional medical labs, which are primarily used to diagnose disease, functional labs look for underlying imbalances and patterns that may be affecting how the body is functioning.
Joanne’s testing revealed several important factors affecting her health:
gut infections and microbiome imbalances
multiple food sensitivities that were contributing to inflammation
elevated stress hormones and disrupted circadian rhythm
low levels of reproductive hormones
These findings helped explain many of her symptoms, from fatigue and brain fog to digestive issues and anxiety.
More importantly, they gave us clear targets for intervention.
But What If You’ve Already Tried Everything and Nothing Has Worked?
You might be thinking, “I’ve already tried so many diets, supplements and protocols… and I still feel terrible.”
This is exactly what I help my clients solve inside The Functional Thyroid Method—by identifying what’s actually missing and addressing it in the right order.
Because it’s not about doing more.
It’s about doing the right things, in the right sequence.
This is why so many women with Hashimoto’s stay stuck—they’re doing everything they’ve been told, but the real drivers of their symptoms are still being missed.
How Joanne Transformed Her Health in Four Months and Regained her Energy, Mental Clarity, Steady Mood, and a Healthy Weight
Over the next several months, we followed a structured plan designed to support the systems affecting her immune and thyroid health.
Within four months, Joanne experienced a full resolution of her symptoms and her follow-up labs reflected her progress.
Her energy returned first. She stopped falling asleep at her kids’ hockey games and once again had the energy to enjoy evenings and date nights with her husband.
Her brain fog lifted. She could walk into a room and remember what she was looking for, and conversations with friends no longer drifted away mid-sentence.
Her sleep improved dramatically. The 3 a.m. wake-ups that had been interrupting her nights disappeared, and she began sleeping through the night.
Her digestion normalized. The bloating that once forced her to unbutton her pants after lunch faded, and she began having regular daily bowel movements.
Joanne lost 15 pounds without restrictive dieting and was close to her goal weight. More importantly, she no longer felt like she was fighting her body.
Her anxiety eased, and her mood felt lighter and more stable. She felt calmer in her body and no longer carried the constant sense of overwhelm that had been weighing her down.
For the first time in years, Joanne felt like herself again: clear-headed, energized, and fully present in her life.
Follow-up labs showed that her thyroid antibodies were no longer detectable on testing. Her T3 levels also returned to normal.
With her physician’s supervision, she no longer needed thyroid medication.
But avoiding medication was never the goal. Many people with Hashimoto’s benefit from thyroid medication, especially if the thyroid gland cannot produce enough hormone on its own.
Medication can also help restore energy and mood, making it easier to implement the nutrition and lifestyle strategies that support long-term improvement.
The goal is always the same: helping the body function better so symptoms improve and people can feel like themselves again.
Why So Many Women with Hashimoto’s Feel Stuck Despite Eating Well and Following Their Doctor’s Advice
Joanne’s experience is incredibly common.
Many women with Hashimoto’s are doing everything they can to stay healthy, eating well, exercising regularly, and following their doctor’s advice, yet they still feel exhausted and confused about why nothing is working.
Often they’re told their labs are normal.
Or that their symptoms are simply part of aging.
You don’t have to keep struggling or accept ongoing symptoms as your new normal. You can feel better.
Fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, digestive issues, and anxiety don’t appear randomly. They are signals that something in the body is out of balance.
Joanne’s story didn’t change because she tried harder.
It changed because we identified what was actually driving her symptoms, and followed a clear, strategic plan.
When the underlying factors are identified and addressed, symptoms often begin to improve.
