Britesquare empowers you to take charge of your autoimmune disease and recover your vitality.

Our comprehensive four-part framework explores the many factors that affect autoimmunity.

Diet & Nutrients

We know our immune system responds to the foods we eat, this is proven by research that shows that a nutrient-dense diet is one of the most powerful treatments for autoimmune disease. Consuming fewer inflammatory foods, adding immune-supporting nutrients, and removing food sensitivities will help build a stronger, more resilient body and balanced immune response.

Gut Microbiome & Leaky Gut

We believe that addressing gut health is a crucial part of any autoimmune program. Mounting evidence shows that poor gut health is a feature in virtually all autoimmune conditions, and that by balancing the microbiome, healing leaky gut, and addressing chronic gut infections like H. Pylori and parasites, we can prevent, and even reverse, autoimmune conditions.

Environmental & Dietary Toxicities

We are all overexposed to chemicals. Environmental toxins are significant risk factors in the development of autoimmune disease. They impair the immune system, disrupt detoxification, promote inflammation and damage mitochondria and gut bacteria. By detoxifying our body, diet, skincare products and living space we can optimize our body's detoxification system and balance the immune system.

Mindset & Lifestyle

We consider the mental and emotional elements of the individual as integral to immune health. The connection between stress and immune function has been documented for over a century and is an established risk factor for autoimmune disease. By improving mindset, and prioritizing sleep, movement, and stress management, our autoimmune clients go from surviving to thriving.

What is autoimmunity?

Autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Psoriasis, Crohn’s and Rheumatoid Arthritis are defined by conditions in which your immune system mistakenly turns against itself. Your immune system usually protects you from diseases and infections, but in individuals with autoimmune diseases, the immune system loses self-tolerance and is no longer able to differentiate between its own cells and foreign invaders, causing it to attack healthy cells, tissues, and organs (1). Autoimmune conditions are marked by common factors: an overactive, chronically alert immune system and widespread inflammation.

Autoimmune conditions can impact all systems in the body. They are chronic, painful, and can be life-threatening. In the US, autoimmune disease is the third most common type of illness after heart disease and cancer, affecting nearly one in five Americans. An estimated 50 million currently have autoimmunity and of the millions diagnosed with autoimmune disease, nearly 80% are women (2). Autoimmunity tends to affect women during periods of extensive stress, and during great hormonal changes such as pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause (3).

The statistics on autoimmunity are daunting:

In the past 10 years, some autoimmune diseases have increased by nearly 300%.

Type 1 diabetes prevalence has nearly doubled in the past 40 years.

It takes, on average 4.5 years and 4 doctors before a correct autoimmune diagnosis.

Predictive antibodies can be detected up to 19 years before clinical disease.

Celiac disease has increased five-fold over the past 30 years, doubling every 15 years.

Inflammatory bowel disease increased by 46% between 2006 and 2021.

There are over 100 different autoimmune diseases that have been identified. A few include:

Multiple Sclerosis (MS), is when the immune system attacks proteins located in the insulating myelin sheath of neurons, resulting in demyelination and neuronal death.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease characterized by patches of red, pink, or purple, dry, itchy, and scaly skin.

Psoriatic Arthritis is a chronic inflammatory arthritis that causes joint pain, stiffness and swelling.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that causes severe swelling and pain in joints.

Sjögren’s Syndrome attacks the lacrimal and salivary glands, resulting in insufficient production of tears and saliva.

Type 1 Diabetes occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys beta-cells of the pancreas, resulting in insufficient insulin production.

Ulcerative Colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes irritation, inflammation, and ulcers in the lining of the large intestine.

Addison's disease is an autoimmune condition in which your adrenal glands don't produce enough of the hormones cortisol and aldosterone.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease in which gluten proteins trigger an immune response that damages the small intestine.

Crohn’s is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes swelling and irritation in the digestive tract.

Graves’ disease is when the immune system creates thyroid antibodies that activate thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR), producing hyperthyroidism.

Hashimoto’s occurs when the immune system makes antibodies that attack the thyroid gland, resulting in decreased production of thyroid hormones, and hypothyroidism.

Lupus (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) is an autoimmune disease that causes severe and persistent inflammation that leads to tissue damage in multiple organs.

Your body is designed to heal.

The current medical system, which is well able to handle acute care situations, does not always know how to assess or treat chronic conditions like autoimmunity. In fact, surveys show that most physicians report that their training in chronic disease is less than adequate (4). Conventional medicine has pharmaceutical options for the treatment of autoimmunity, however many people don’t feel better because the underlying immune dysfunction that created the disease hasn’t been addressed.

If you’ve been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, you may be feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. While genetics may increase the risk of autoimmunity, environmental and lifestyle factors play a larger role in these conditions. Once the underlying root causes are addressed, our clients’ symptoms resolve and they feel better. This improved quality of life might be increased energy, sleeping through the night, losing weight, or finally getting rid of the brain fog. Your body is designed to heal.

Health can be complicated and overwhelming. Kim Kroonenburg created Britesquare to demystify that complexity. As a functional nutrition health coach with over 20 years of industry experience, and based on her work helping countless clients get results, Kim founded Britesquare to offer her clients a simple, yet powerful, four-part framework for achieving optimal wellness.

Certified in Nutritional Medicine through the American University of Complimentary Medicine, Kim is also an honors university graduate. Kim is trained in the use of nutrition and high-quality supplements as powerful tools for attaining health and vitality. But achieving health goals is more than a list of recommendations, it requires dedication and support during the client’s transformation. Kim recognizes this need and is also a Certified Integrative Health Coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition where she trained in supporting behavior change, and in how to consider other aspects of her clients’ lives including mental and emotional elements.

Kim is constantly deepening her knowledge by taking new courses taught by world-renown functional medicine clinicians such as Dr. Aviva Romm, Dr. Elisa Song and Chris Kresser M.S. Kim has studied with acclaimed nutritional biochemist Dr. Libby Weaver, and has studied adrenals with Dr. Peter Kan through the Neurometabolic Academy. Kim is also certified in Therapeutic Diets for Gut Health with Julie Matthews, MS, NC . Kim is passionate about functional lab testing and has trained with Dr. Cheryl Burdette, Dr. Carrie Jones, Julie Davey RN, MSN, Dr. Erik Lundquist, Dr. Chris Magryta and Dr. Jacquel Patterson.

Currently in private practice in the Northeast US, Kim’s specialties include gut health, hormones, and autoimmune conditions. Kim’s interest in autoimmunity has compelled her to take additional coursework including the “Healing Autoimmunity Naturally with Functional Medicine” training with Chris Kresser M.S. L.Ac., the “Autoimmune Protocol (AIP)” training with Dr. Sarah Ballentyne, as well as Harvard-trained Dr. Akil Palanisamy’s course “The Tiger Protocol and Autoimmunity: Toxins, Gut Health and Stress.” She believes that by improving the health of the individual we can make the world a brighter place.
